Leading Campus Sexual Assault Prevention Organization It’s On Us will Support Students As Finalized Title IX Rule is Implemented

The final Title IX rule on sexual harassment is a pivotal moment for survivors and advocates across the nation who have fought tirelessly for these reforms

Today, as the Biden Administration finally released its updated Title IX rule on sexual harassment, It’s On Us Executive Director Tracey Vitchers spoke out on the new regulations and their impact on student survivors of sexual assault. It’s On Us has long advocated for updated Title IX regulations that prioritize the protection of all students and survivors. The Trump Administration and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos systematically dismantled Title IX protections, harming students and survivors. Over the last four years, students have navigated these dangerous Title IX guidelines while waiting through multiple delays for the Department of Education to update the regulations and restore student protections.

In response to the updated Title IX rule, It’s On Us Executive Director Tracey Vitchers said:

“Today, the Biden Administration finally fulfilled its promise to student survivors to return Title IX to its original intent of protecting their civil rights in the aftermath of sexual violence.

“Over the last four years, Title IX has been weaponized against student survivors, making it harder for them to continue their education in the wake of sexual assault. This new rule will ensure survivors no longer face retaliation from their institutions for reporting sexual harassment or live under a Title IX that privileges accused perpetrators over students who were sexually assaulted. With the updated regulations, students will have tools to hold their institutions accountable for failing to comply and violating their civil rights.

“Today’s release of the final Title IX rule on sexual harassment is a pivotal moment for survivors and advocates across the nation who have fought tirelessly for these reforms. It’s On Us is proud to have been part of these advocacy efforts and will work to educate students on the implications of the rule change ahead of its enforcement next academic year.”

With the finalization of the updated sexual harassment rules, the Department of Education must commit to expanding Title IX to protect all students and finalize the athletics rule to prioritize the safety of LGBTQ+ students.

The new rule on sexual harassment must be implemented swiftly and efficiently, and It’s On Us will work to educate students on the implications of the rule change ahead of its enforcement next academic year.
