Americans Struggling with Student Loan Debt Repayment Can Receive Help at Upcoming DC, Atlanta Events

Civic Nation and 1K Women Strong will host student loan debt clinics to answer borrowers’ questions and give individualized support on navigating repayment

Washington, DC: Today, Civic Nation and 1K Women Strong announced two student debt clinics happening in Washington, DC, and Atlanta, GA, to help borrowers understand their student loan repayment options. Navigating student loan repayment can be overwhelming and confusing, and people have reported waiting on hold for hours to get help. These in-person clinics will include a training and Q&A session on student loans led by Federal Student Aid facilitators, and an open clinic for borrowers to get individualized support navigating their student loans and signing up for income-driven repayment programs. Registration is required.

Americans have more than $1.7 trillion in student loan debt impacting nearly 44 million borrowers. Many borrowers can take advantage of the U.S. Department of Education’s Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan, which ​​will cut some borrowers’ monthly payments to zero, save other borrowers around $1,000 per year, prevent balances from growing because of unpaid interest and get more borrowers closer to forgiveness.

The first clinic in Washington, DC, will take place on Sunday, January 21st at 1:30 p.m. ET at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library (901 G St NW). Borrowers can sign up for the event at civicnation.us/saveclinic. Details for the Atlanta clinic will be available soon.

The clinics are focused on low- and middle-income borrowers, but all are welcome to learn about the various repayment options available. Federal Student Aid staff will be on site to answer questions throughout the event and laptops will be available for use.

Civic Nation’s SAVE on Student Debt campaign launched in August 2023 in partnership with the U.S. Department of Education to connect borrowers to student debt relief through the SAVE Plan. 1K Women Strong supports Black women and their allies on electoral matters, education campaigns and advocacy issues. With trained organizers on the ground in seven states, 1K Women Strong has mobilized more than one million voters nationally for state and federal elections, student debt forgiveness, and more.
